It’s that time of year again for the annual Duquesne University Media department Celebration of Excellence Day! This year’s event will be held in the Student Union Ballroom on the 4th floor on Tuesday, March 20th.

The Celebration of Excellence Day is a time for faculty and students to showcase another successful year of learning and creation and to provide high school students and potential future college students an opportunity to hear from media professionals and observe collegiate-level quality work.

So what can you look forward to at the Celebration of Excellence Day?

The Student Showcase

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

At the forefront of our “Celebration of Excellence” is the student showcase. Here, students will display portfolio work and are prepared to engage visitors. Displayed work includes projects completed for fall 2017 and spring 2018 classes. Everyone will have the opportunity to talk with current Media students and professors about what they can learn here at Duquesne University.

There will be booths representing the many organizations and groups Duquesne has to offer such as The Duquesne Duke, Duquesne Student Television (DSTV), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Off the Bluff Magazine, and Duquesne Student Radio (WDSR). Current group members will be there to talk about the work they do and about their experience with the clubs.

In addition, there will be a resume help table with members from the Center for Career Development to assist with resumes, an internship information table, a graduate information table, and a table about the 9/11 Tribute Museum internship.

Mini-Workshops

During the Student Showcase will be three Mini-Workshop. The How to Spot Fake News workshop will teach participants how to identify credible news sources. The Logo and Campaign Design workshop will give participants the chance to develop a color scheme for a logo and subsequent campaign. The Digital Media Arts workshop is a surprise! Will it be about web design? Or maybe video work. Come to the Celebration of Excellence to find out. Participants are able to win prizes when they attend a workshop.

Panel Discussion

12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Following the Student Showcase is the Panel Discussion. Industry professionals from a variety of mediums will share advice with students regarding resumes, internships, interviews, portfolios, etc. The panel discussion will be moderated by Media alumnus Julian Routh, who is currently a Digital Reporter for Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Members of the panel include: Chris Daley, the Senior Manager of Digital Media at UPMC Health Plan; James Drake, the User Experience Director of Omni-Channel eCommerce at American Eagle Outfitters; Anastasia Farmerie, Producer/Production Manager at PMI Production; Brian Hyslop, the Editor-in-Chief of Pittsburgh Magazine; Abby Krizner, the morning host of The X (105.9 FM); and Erin Paull Schwille, Vice President of Edelman, a global communications marketing firm.

Students will have the chance to ask the panelists questions and network following the event.

There will be a branded wall for students to interact with, a special Snapchat filter specifically for the event, and can interact with us via our social media channels.

The Duquesne University Media department Celebration of Excellence Day is open to everyone and is always a fun time for all. We hope to see you there!
