United States census data from 2010 indicates that there is a continuing exodus of African-American millennials from the city of Pittsburgh. Julie Pawlikowski, a second year graduate student in the Media Management program, produced a short investigative reporting video piece on the causes of the departure. Studies show that many young African-Americans feel ‘unwelcome’ in the city. The video also explores the efforts of marketing and event management firm Pyramid PGH to help remedy the situation.

One of Pyramid PGH’s goals is to help attract African-American millennials to the city of Pittsburgh by providing spaces where they can feel welcome and prosper. Founder of Pyramid PGH, Sadik Roberts says his firm hosts parties and cultural activities to facilitate the congregation of African-American millennials.

Pawlikowski said it was important to her to be able to tell Pyramid PGH’s story. “I hope that this video will reach more people who will learn about Pyramid PGH and in turn collaborate to help Pittsburgh grow,” said Pawlikowski. “Doing this video opened my eyes to the struggles that are easily ignored by those of us with privileges.” Pawlikowski also added that her own efforts through the video has enabled her to grow and to help ensure Pittsburgh retains its youth of all backgrounds and communities.
